South Africa does not feature in the first-tier of dive destinations most people list — and for the typical tropical reef experience, there are warmer alternatives. But for shark diving and wildlife spectacle, South Africa is in the conversation with the very best.

The KwaZulu-Natal coast (the east coast, Indian Ocean side) is home to Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks, two offshore pinnacles that hold some of the most reliably dramatic shark diving in the world. Aliwal Shoal, in particular, is famous for ragged-tooth sharks (sand tiger sharks) that gather in caves and overhangs from June through October. These animals — slow, prehistoric-looking, with rows of protruding teeth — are peaceful, curious, and extraordinarily photogenic.

From June through July, the same coast witnesses the sardine run — one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth. Billions of sardines migrate northward along the coast in a bait ball so vast it's visible from space. Above: gannets and dolphins. Below: bronze whaler sharks, dusky sharks, and humpback whales driving the bait balls upward. Dive boats launch through surf and divers drop into blue-green chaos.

On the west coast (Atlantic side), Gansbaai south of Cape Town is the global capital of cage diving with great white sharks. The waters around Dyer Island and Geyser Rock hold one of the densest populations of great whites in the world, drawn by the enormous Cape fur seal colony. Cage diving is surface-based — no scuba required — but the encounters at the cage are as dramatic as advertised.

Sodwana Bay in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is the access point for the Maputaland Reef, the southernmost coral reef in Africa, with turtles, ragged-tooth sharks, and dive sites accessible only to advanced divers willing to navigate beach launches.
