Sail Rock — Gulf of Thailand, Thailand

Sail Rock (Hin Bai) is a granite pinnacle rising from 40 meters to just above the surface in the Gulf of Thailand, roughly equidistant between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. The rock is named for its resemblance to a sailing ship's hull viewed from the side — a narrow fin of granite cutting above the waterline. Below the waterline, it's one of the best single dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand.

The Chimney

The feature that makes Sail Rock distinctive is the chimney — a vertical swim-through that runs from 18 meters to the surface, penetrating the rock itself. Descending (or ascending) through it, with the shaft of light from above and the rock walls close on either side, is one of those dive moments that photographers return to the site specifically to capture. The chimney is wide enough to navigate comfortably in single file without snagging equipment.

The Marine Life

Sail Rock sits in the convergence zone between the Gulf's southern and northern water masses, producing the nutrient upwelling that draws whale sharks from February through April. They cruise past the rock at depths of 5–20 meters, sometimes circling the pinnacle, sometimes passing through on a trajectory that allows a 10-minute parallel swim before they vanish into the blue.

Bull sharks are occasional winter visitors. Giant groupers inhabit the deeper cavities. The pinnacle is encircled by schools of barracuda, yellowtail fusiliers, and batfish. At depth, leopard sharks rest on the sandy floor. The hard coral coverage on the sheltered (western) face of the rock is dense and healthy.

Getting There

Day trips run from Koh Tao (the closest base, 45 minutes by speedboat) and from Koh Phangan (90 minutes). Most operators on Koh Tao run Sail Rock as a two-tank day trip.
