Thailand
Thailand is where scuba diving meets its most democratic version — Koh Tao is famously the second-largest producer of Open Water certifications in the world, and it earned that title fairly: shallow, warm, gin-clear water, a dense cluster of easy sites, and dive operators who have been doing this at scale for three decades.
But Thailand is much more than Koh Tao.
The Similan Islands, 60 km off the Andaman coast of Phang Nga, are liveaboard territory — nine uninhabited granite islands fringed with hard corals, where giant trevally patrol the seamounts and whale sharks appear from February through April. Richelieu Rock, the most famous single site in Thailand, sits 20 km further north and is regularly called one of the best dive sites in Asia for biodiversity.
In the south, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang (the 'Red Rock' and 'Purple Rock') rise from the deep off the coast of Koh Lanta — soft coral walls dropping to 70 meters where mantas and whale sharks arrive seasonally.
Seasons matter in Thailand. The Andaman side (Similans, Phuket, Koh Lanta) is best November–April. The Gulf of Thailand (Koh Tao, Koh Samui) dives best May–September. Plan accordingly.
