Cathedral Rock
Cathedral Rock — Ari Atoll, Maldives
Cathedral Rock (also known as Maaya Thila in some operator literature, though the two are distinct sites in South Ari) is a submerged pinnacle on the inner reef of Ari Atoll whose overhanging ledges, swim-throughs, and hard coral formations give it the vaulted quality that suggested the name to the first divers who found it.
The Structure
The pinnacle rises from a sand plateau at 28 meters to approximately 12 meters below the surface. On its shallower sections, the rock has eroded into a series of overhanging ledges and narrow passages that divers can navigate through in single file — hence 'Cathedral.' The passages are 2–5 meters tall and several meters wide, easily manageable without cave certification, and the light plays through them in ways that reward underwater photographers willing to stay shallow.
The Pelagic Action
The channel current that sweeps past Cathedral Rock concentrates marine life at the pinnacle's edges. Grey reef sharks stack in the blue on the down-current side, hanging in 10–15 metre depth bands. Napoleon wrasse are resident — a large male, recognizable by the pronounced hump on his forehead, has been seen here consistently across multiple dive seasons. Eagle rays drift past in the mid-water on the upcurrent side.
The shallower sections (12–18m) hold dense populations of anthias, fusiliers, and Moorish idols in the coral formations. Whitetip reef sharks rest in the overhangs.
Night Dives
Cathedral Rock is one of the better night dive sites in Ari Atoll. The whitetips become active, hunting in the torchlight with the quick, precise movements they suppress during daylight. Moray eels — some reaching 1.5 meters — emerge and patrol the ledge margins. A group of nurse sharks rests on the sand plateau below the pinnacle.
