Maldives
The Maldives is not a country so much as a topography — 1,192 coral islands strung across 26 atolls, most barely above sea level, nearly all of them surrounded by reef.
This is channel diving territory. The atolls form natural aquariums where tidal flushes funnel pelagic life through narrow openings twice a day. Grey reef sharks stack up in the current. Eagle rays appear and vanish. Napoleon wrasse the size of small cars come up to inspect the visiting divers, then leave.
The southern atolls — Addu, Gaafu, Huvadhoo — offer the remotest diving and the biggest pelagics. The central atolls around Malé are where most resort diving happens, with easy access to the famous channels of Ari and Rasdhoo. The northern atolls, especially Baa, hold the secret weapon: Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays aggregate by the hundreds to feed on plankton from June through November. It is, without exaggeration, the largest manta feeding event in the world.
Visibility is reliably 20–30 meters. Water temperature stays between 27–30°C year-round. The monsoons flip the wind direction twice a year, which changes which side of the atolls is diveable — but the diving never stops.
