Indonesia

If there is one country that contains all of scuba diving, it is Indonesia.

The archipelago sprawls across the Coral Triangle, the epicenter of marine biodiversity on the planet — more species of fish, coral, and mollusks than anywhere else. And within Indonesia, the diving itself is absurdly varied.

Raja Ampat, in West Papua, has the highest recorded reef-fish biodiversity on Earth. Every dive is a kaleidoscope. You descend into a soft-coral garden and twenty species flash past before you've even checked your gauge.

Komodo is drift diving in ripping current over fields of pink and yellow soft corals, with mantas feeding at cleaning stations and sharks patrolling the blue. Cold upwellings on the southern sites make the corals unreasonably vivid.

Lembeh Strait is the global capital of muck diving — silty black-sand slopes hiding mimic octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish, hairy frogfish, and every rare nudibranch you can photograph.

Bali's northeast coast (Tulamben, Amed) holds the USAT Liberty, a World War II wreck broken onto a sloping beach where you can walk into the dive in fins.

Pick any of the above and plan a two-week trip. You will not run out of things to see.
