Belize

The Belize Barrier Reef is the largest reef in the Western Hemisphere, second only to Australia's Great Barrier in the world. It runs 300 km along the coast of Belize, sheltering a mosaic of atolls, cayes, and mangrove-fringed lagoons.

At the center of Lighthouse Reef, about 70 km offshore, is the Great Blue Hole — a 124-meter-deep circular sinkhole that formed as a cave system during the last ice age and collapsed when sea levels rose. Cousteau called it one of the top ten dive sites in the world. The diving itself, at ~40m to see the famous stalactites, is more historic than marine — but the context of diving into a perfect geometric circle of deep blue is unlike anything else.

The real diving value of Belize is less about the Blue Hole and more about the wall dives at Lighthouse Reef and Turneffe Atoll. Half Moon Caye Wall drops to over 1,000m, with eagle rays, reef sharks, and macro photographers' dreams in every overhang.

Liveaboards are the best way to dive Belize at depth. Day-trip diving from San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) covers the closer reefs and is plenty for a casual dive trip.
