Turks and Caicos Islands
Turks and Caicos is two chains of islands — the Turks Islands and the Caicos Islands — separated by the Turks Island Passage, a 2,000-meter-deep channel that produces some of the most dramatic wall diving in the Caribbean.
Grand Turk, the capital island, has walls starting as shallow as 10 meters that drop straight into the channel. From January through March, humpback whales migrate through the channel on their way to and from their Silver Bank breeding grounds — divers can reliably hear them singing on every descent, and occasionally encounter them directly.
Providenciales (Provo), the main tourist hub, is fringed by the 100-km Caicos Barrier Reef and has dozens of dive sites within 20 minutes of the boat ramp. The Wall at Northwest Point drops from 10 meters to infinity, covered in sponges and patrolled by Caribbean reef sharks.
Salt Cay, the quietest of the inhabited islands, is the prime spot for shore-based humpback watching and diving — population: under 100 people.
The Turks and Caicos are British Overseas Territory. English is the official language. Providenciales Airport (PLS) has direct flights from major US hubs and London.
