Portugal
The Atlantic Diving Frontier
Portugal's diving is split between the mainland Atlantic and the remote mid-Atlantic archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores. The two experiences are completely different — and both are world class.
The Azores offer one of the most extraordinary pelagic diving experiences in Europe. Between May and October, blue sharks, mako sharks, devil rays, mobula schools, and whale sharks cycle through the waters around Santa Maria, Pico, and Faial. The Dollabarat reef off Santa Maria is among the most biodiverse dive sites in the North Atlantic.
Madeira's sheltered volcanic coastline offers easier diving with grouper, barracuda, and Atlantic spadefish. Mainland Portugal's Algarve and Sesimbra provide accessible dive sites with lots of marine life but colder water (15-22°C). All the Portuguese archipelagos require at least 5mm wetsuits; the mainland needs 7mm or drysuit outside summer.
