Oman
Oman occupies a large and diverse stretch of the Arabian Peninsula's coastline, and the diving — across three distinct marine environments — reflects that geography.
The Daymaniyat Islands, a nature reserve 30 km off the coast of Muscat, are the most accessible and most visited dive destination in the country. Nine uninhabited islands in the Gulf of Oman, surrounded by protected reef. Green and hawksbill turtles nest here and are reliably encountered on every dive. Whale sharks pass through the reserve from June through October, feeding on seasonal plankton blooms. Hard and soft corals cover the shallower reef structures; walls and slopes hold schools of sweetlips, fusiliers, and resident reef sharks.
The Musandam Peninsula, technically an Omani exclave separated from the rest of the country by the UAE, is dramatically different terrain — deep fjords (known locally as khors) carved by tectonic forces, with sheer limestone walls dropping straight into the sea. The diving in the khors is a strange, atmospheric experience: visibility is high, the walls are covered in sea fans and sponges, and the silence in the enclosed fjords is unlike anything in open-ocean diving. Dolphins are common in the channels, and whale shark sightings are reported seasonally.
Masirah Island, an island off the central Omani coast, hosts one of the most significant seasonal whale shark aggregations in the Arabian Sea — hundreds of individuals reported at peak season. Access is developing but still limited compared to the more established sites.
Oman is an emerging dive destination: infrastructure is improving rapidly, the water is warm (26–32°C in summer), and the marine life is outstanding. Best season: October–May, before summer heat and rougher Gulf of Oman conditions arrive.
