Italy
Mediterranean Italy Under the Waves
Italy's 7,600 km of coastline hides a surprising variety of diving — from the cold, current-swept waters of the Ligurian Sea to the warm, visibility-rich Tyrrhenian and the volcanic dramas of Sicily and the Aeolian Islands.
The Portofino Marine Protected Area offers some of the best Mediterranean dive sites in Italy, with red coral, conger eel, octopus, and the famous Christ of the Abyss statue resting at 17 meters since 1954. Further south, Sicily offers WWII wrecks, volcanic underwater topography around Ustica, and dive sites on Pantelleria and the Aeolian Islands with water temperatures warming to 25°C in summer.
Sardinia and Tavolara complete Italy's diving geography with excellent visibility, grouper encounters, and caves. Most centers operate PADI or SSI but Italian free-diving and technical communities are also strong.
