Dominican Republic
Hispaniola's Two Coasts
The Dominican Republic offers two very different diving experiences. The north coast around Puerto Plata and Sosúa has Caribbean classics — reef diving, wall drops, and small wrecks — in clear, warm water. But the real draw is in the north where humpback whales gather on Silver Bank between January and April.
Silver Bank, 90 km north of the country, is one of only three places in the world where divers can legally get in the water with humpback whales. Liveaboards operate only during the winter breeding season, and encounters are strictly regulated — no scuba, only snorkel.
On the south coast, Santo Domingo and Bayahíbe offer Caribbean reef diving with cenotes inland — freshwater limestone sinkholes that cavern-trained divers can explore. The country's dive infrastructure is mature on both coasts, with PADI centers and Spanish/English service.
