What Makes a Destination Easy
For the purposes of this list: shallow (under 20m), warm (above 27 degrees C), clear (15m+ visibility), calm (minimal current), and with good marine life accessible to Open Water certified divers.
1. Koh Tao, Thailand
The most popular certification destination in the world for good reason. Warm, calm Gulf of Thailand water; multiple sites under 15m; whale sharks seasonally; excellent instruction infrastructure.
2. Amed, Bali, Indonesia
Northeast Bali's calm black-sand coast offers shore diving starting from the beach. The Liberty wreck at Tulamben begins at 3m. Instruction is cheap and high-quality.
3. Dahab, Egypt
Sinai's dive-town, with sites like the Blue Hole Lagoon (shallow side), Lighthouse, and Napoleon Reef accessible from shore in calm conditions and visibility exceeding 20m.
4. Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
The north side (Eden Rock, Devil's Grotto) offers calm shore diving in crystalline Caribbean water. Stingray City is accessible at 1m depth on the sandbar.
5. Bonaire
The island's 60+ shore dive sites are accessible independently by rental truck. Most begin in 3m and slope gently to 30m. No boats required.
6. Isla Mujeres, Mexico
Offshore from Cancun; gentle drift diving over shallow reefs; whale sharks accessible by snorkel June-September.
7. Bohol, Philippines
Alona Beach on Panglao Island offers gentle reef dives in calm conditions. Easy access from Cebu. Excellent beginner infrastructure.
8. Hurghada, Egypt
Red Sea resort town with most dive sites in the 10-25m range and visibility of 20-25m. Thistlegorm liveaboards depart from here.
9. The Florida Keys
Coral reef diving at John Pennekamp State Park (Key Largo) — the only living barrier reef in the continental US. Calm, warm, shallow. The Christ of the Abyss statue at 9m is a classic first dive.
10. Perhentian Islands, Malaysia
Two small islands off the northeast coast of peninsular Malaysia; affordable accommodation; calm, warm water; marine turtle sightings virtually guaranteed. Seasonal (April-October).
11. Moorea, French Polynesia
A short ferry from Tahiti. Lemon sharks and blacktip reef sharks in shallow lagoon conditions, accessible to beginners.
12. Apo Island, Philippines
A community-managed marine sanctuary off the coast of Negros Oriental. Turtles at every dive, excellent coral, easy conditions. A model of marine conservation.
13. Curacao
Drive-up shore diving along a protected leeward coast; calm entry; vivid Caribbean reef from 3m depth.
14. Madeira, Portugal
Atlantic blue-water diving with good visibility (25m+) and large pelagics. The Garajau Natural Reserve has remarkably accessible wild marine life for a European destination.
15. Malta
Mediterranean diving with some of the highest clarity in the region; accessible wrecks suitable for non-penetration diving; warm July-October water.
