Overview
Red Mangrove Isabela is a 4-star, luxury-tier eco-lodge in Puerto Villamil, on Isabela Island in the Galápagos — the largest island in the archipelago, and the best land base for reaching some of the region's most demanding dive sites without committing to a full liveaboard itinerary. It opened in December 2010 as the Isabela Divers Lodge; room counts differ between sources today, so no specific number is given here.
The Diving
This isn't a dedicated dive resort with its own boats and dive staff; diving here is arranged through local operators, with the lodge functioning as accommodation close to the dock rather than as an all-in-one dive operation. That distinction matters for planning, but it doesn't limit access — Isabela is the departure point for Tuburón, Roca Redonda, and dive sites along Isabela's eastern coast, and it also sits within reach of the archipelago's headline sites: Gordon Rocks, Wolf Island, and Darwin's Arch, three of the most cited big-animal sites in the Eastern Pacific for hammerhead schools and pelagic activity. The lodge holds a PADI/National Geographic Dive Center designation — reportedly the only one of its kind in Ecuador and the Galápagos — alongside PADI 5-Star status.
The trade-off against a liveaboard is flexibility: guests can combine diving with the Galápagos' land-based wildlife (giant tortoises, marine iguanas, the volcanic landscape of Isabela itself) rather than spending the whole trip at sea.
The Resort
As an eco-lodge rather than a purpose-built dive resort, Red Mangrove Isabela doesn't advertise its own house reef — guests coordinate dive days with outside operators based near the dock. The on-site Coco Restaurant serves three meals daily.
Who It's For
This suits divers who want the Galápagos experience without a full liveaboard commitment, or who want to pair serious diving with substantial time on land seeing the islands' non-marine wildlife. Divers who want a wall-to-wall, boat-based dive week with zero logistics of their own may prefer a liveaboard instead.
