Papua Explorers Dive Resort Review: On the Water in Raja Ampat

September 12, 2026 By Admin 2 min read

Overview

Papua Explorers Dive Resort is an eco-luxury property built on stilts over the water at Gam Island, in Indonesia's Raja Ampat — widely regarded as the global epicenter of marine biodiversity. It's a 5-star, luxury-tier resort with 15 wooden bungalows on stilts directly over the house reef, built in partnership with the neighboring village of Yenwaupnor — each trade on the build (carpentry, thatching, and so on) paired one local master craftsman with two apprentices from the village.

The Diving

Cape Kri holds the record for the highest fish count ever recorded on a single dive, and it's a realistic speedboat trip from the resort, alongside Manta Sandy, Blue Magic, and Sardine Reef — four sites that between them cover manta cleaning stations, big schools of fusiliers and barracuda, and current-driven pelagic action. The dive center holds PADI 5-Star status and runs small-group diving with up to four dives a day, including night dives, plus a six-week Divemaster/marine ecology course for guests pursuing certification alongside a real conservation curriculum. Full photo facilities are available for guests documenting Raja Ampat's famously dense reef life.

Guests based here are also within the wider Indonesian dive circuit that includes Komodo's Manta Point and Castle Rock and Cannibal Rock, along with the USAT Liberty wreck — though those specific sites are a different region of Indonesia and not day trips from Raja Ampat.

The Resort

Built on stilts over the water, the resort's eco-luxury positioning matches Raja Ampat's broader conservation-forward identity, and it's picked up real recognition for it: a Dive Travel Award in both 2019 and 2021, an ADTO Environmental Award in 2019, and a TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice award. Getting here involves a free group transfer from Sorong airport, but only on Sundays and Wednesdays, and only for stays of at least seven nights — a scheduling detail worth planning around.

Who It's For

Serious divers and underwater photographers who've specifically chosen Raja Ampat for its biodiversity will find exactly what they came for. Small group sizes and up to four dives daily suit divers who want to maximize water time over a multi-day stay rather than a light touring pace, and the minimum 7-night structure suits exactly that kind of trip.
