Overview
Lizard Island Resort occupies its own island inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, 240 km north of Cairns — reachable only by a one-hour scenic flight from Cairns, there's no boat option. It's a 5-star, luxury-tier, all-inclusive property with 40 units across eight room categories, from Gardenview Rooms up to freestanding houses and pavilions. The surrounding area has been a National Park since 1937 and a Marine Park since 1974.
The Diving
The standout site is the Cod Hole, where divers hand-feed potato cods large enough to be startling on a first encounter — genuinely car-sized fish, tame from decades of controlled interaction. Beyond that signature dive, guests have access to some of the Great Barrier Reef's better-preserved outer reef sections, a meaningful distinction given how much of the accessible inner reef has suffered from repeated bleaching events. The resort's remote position, far from the more heavily trafficked reef sections near Cairns and Port Douglas, is a real asset here.
Further afield, the region includes sites cited among Australia's best: the SS Yongala wreck, Ribbon Reef No. 10, Osprey Reef, and Ningaloo Reef — though these vary widely in distance and aren't all realistic day trips from Lizard Island itself.
The Resort
The resort's standing in the luxury travel world is unusually well documented: it holds a Michelin Three-Key rating — the top tier, and the first Oceania property to receive it — and is a member of Relais & Châteaux, Virtuoso Preferred, and Luxury Lodges of Australia. Condé Nast Traveler's 2025 Readers' Choice Awards named it the #1 resort in Australia and the Pacific. The property doesn't accept children under 10.
Who It's For
Divers with the budget for a top-tier, low-volume Australian dive trip, who want the Cod Hole experience and outer-reef access without a liveaboard, are the target guest here. It's not a budget option, it's not built for large groups, and it's not a fit for families traveling with young children.
